Health Services Handbook
Tāngata Whaiora

Introducing Tāngata Whaiora: your Defence Health services handbook

The Tāngata Whaiora handbook is designed to arm Regular and Reserve or Territorial Force members with the information you need to maximise use of NZDF Health and wellbeing services. Compiled into one easy to follow guide, you’ll find information about medical and dental gradings, specialist care and referrals, when and how to access health and wellbeing services, health FAQs and much more.

Whether it’s clarifying processes, outlining your healthcare entitlements, or building trust in the services offered, Tāngata Whaiora will empower you to utilise the wide range of NZDF services available. These services work together to support your wellbeing across the four domains of health: taha tinana/physical, taha wairua/spiritual, taha hinengaro/mental, and taha whānau/family and social.

Note: For the most up to date contact details of the health and wellbeing service providers at your local Camp or Base, click on “Please select a location” at the top right for a drop-down menu.

Tāngata Whaiora is also a reminder that you have the most influence over your own health. Doing what you can to stay healthy and seeking healthcare assistance when you need it will mean you stay fit or return to fitness as soon as possible following illness or injury. Importantly, investing in maintaining the best health possible now will ensure you enjoy better health throughout your whole life. Seeking help early for the support and treatment you need to function at your best also demonstrates courage, commitment, comradeship and integrity. It shows that you take your responsibilities to do your job seriously and that you respect those around you who rely on your ability to perform to your best.
