Madonna Hug
00:07
so this exercise is called the madonna
00:09
hug and it's this amazing exercise that
00:11
will probably feel a little bit unusual
00:13
the first few times you do it but if you
00:15
do it it's a great deal of fun and it's
00:17
a really awesome way to build connection
00:20
in the relationship and to create a
00:23
sense of safety particularly from a
00:25
female partner to a male partner and
00:29
it can be used in a lot of different uh
00:31
situations and after you've done it
00:33
about five or ten times you will
00:35
intuitively have a really good sense
00:37
about when this is going to be
00:38
appropriate
00:39
so for the madonna hug basically the
00:41
guy's going to be sitting down on a
00:43
chair
00:44
and he's going to open his legs slightly
00:47
and his female partner is going to walk
00:50
towards him and
00:52
and then put her arms around
00:54
him and he's going to put his arms
00:56
around her and
00:58
so guys this isn't a grope session um
01:00
this is an opportunity to um you know
01:03
just find a place that feels comfortable
01:05
which in most cases will be resting on
01:07
top of the hips
01:09
and um
01:10
and so as you see here manu is uh
01:13
putting her hands just on the back of
01:14
luke's neck and um and she's cradling
01:17
the um uh the back of his head in the
01:20
same position that we would tend to um
01:23
to hold a baby when we were supporting
01:25
it now this this is really powerful
01:28
because this activates uh the
01:31
the baby part of the brain and it
01:33
triggers feelings of safety and and
01:35
security
01:36
now occasionally what may happen
01:39
particularly if there is some some
01:41
difficulties in your early childhood or
01:43
some fears about vulnerability and stuff
01:46
sometimes this may feel quite
01:48
uncomfortable and there may be an
01:50
experience that the guy has of feeling
01:53
triggered and um or feeling a bit
01:55
smothered and so if that was to happen
01:58
what he's going to do is he's going to
01:59
lean back
02:00
and um and manu is going to is going to
02:03
release him and they're going to go to
02:05
eye contact because that will help
02:06
engage the adult brain and just create a
02:08
sense of reassurance and safety and then
02:11
they'd wait
02:12
until that was karma take it both of
02:14
them will take a deep breath and then
02:16
they'll try going back into the hug now
02:19
as manu's other hand is going to be
02:21
resting over his back she is not going
02:24
to be doing this which is the rubbing um
02:27
thing um
02:28
manu is actually naturally doing the
02:30
rubbing really slow i have seen clients
02:32
kind of like rub them like they're
02:33
trying to reassure them
02:35
that will distract uh the person from it
02:37
you're just basically just going to hold
02:40
keep your hands fairly still and just
02:42
breathe slowly and deeply
02:44
now as you see her manu is also resting
02:46
resting her face or a chin
02:48
on the top of his head
02:50
and um and so he's fully held in in the
02:53
embrace and um and so there's the
02:56
feeling that that he can get as someone
02:59
who's much bigger than manu that lu can
03:01
have that feeling of being held by her
03:03
by being surrounded in her embrace
03:05
experiencing the comfort of her her body
03:08
in a very um a very tender
03:12
way
03:12
and
03:14
and so then one of the other things that
03:15
manu can do that can be really powerful
03:17
is if she just takes a deep breath and
03:19
this will will feel strange the first
03:21
few times you do it take a deep breath
03:23
and go
03:24
[Music]
03:26
again this will feel really strange but
03:28
what it does is it sends a harmonic down
03:30
through the body and it helps reset the
03:33
nervous system
03:35
so assuming that luke is now comfortable
03:37
enough that his eyes are closed that
03:38
he's relaxed his brain will
03:40
automatically have shifted much more
03:42
towards the baby brain which means that
03:44
he's going to be in a um his brain will
03:47
be operating on a slightly lower
03:49
electrical frequency similar to the
03:51
state that will happen when we go into a
03:53
trance or meditation and so he's likely
03:57
to be in a space of feeling quite
03:58
timeless so
04:00
he might have a sense that this has gone
04:02
on for a really long time or a really
04:05
short time and um and the idea is that
04:08
manu is in a position that that's
04:10
comfortable that she can hold this for
04:12
as long as necessary
04:14
and then when luke is ready to you know
04:16
emerge from that he will kind of signal
04:19
that he might just give her a little
04:20
squeeze but he comes out and they are
04:23
going to make eye contact and this is
04:26
helping them connect adult brain to
04:28
adult brain again and
04:30
and then they can move out of the hope
04:47
you
so this exercise is called the madonna
00:09
hug and it's this amazing exercise that
00:11
